DIABETES & AYURVEDA

UNDERSTANDING DIABETES:

Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder characterized by persistently high blood glucose levels. It occurs when the body either doesn't produce enough insulin, or when the cells become resistant to the effects of insulin, a hormone that regulates blood sugar. Chronic hyperglycemia can damage various organs and systems, leading to serious health complications.

Types of Diabetes Mellitus:

  1. Type 1 Diabetes: An autoimmune disease where the body's immune system attacks and destroys insulin-producing cells in the pancreas.
  2. Type 2 Diabetes: Characterized by insulin resistance, where the body's cells don't respond properly to insulin, and the pancreas may not produce enough insulin to compensate.
  3. Gestational Diabetes: Develops during pregnancy and typically resolves after delivery, but increases the risk of developing type 2 diabetes later in life.
  4. Drug Induced: some drugs like statins and steroids may cause diabetes.

Symptoms of Diabetes Mellitus:

Increased thirst and frequent urination (polyuria)
Unexplained weight loss
Increased hunger (polyphagia)
Blurry vision
Slow-healing sores
Fatigue and weakness
Numbness or tingling in the hands and feet

Causes and Risk Factors: by knowing risk factors, you can prevent diabetes.

Type 1 Diabetes:Genetic predisposition and environmental factors are thought to play a role, although the exact cause is unknown.
Type 2 Diabetes: Risk factors include obesity, lack of physical activity, family history, ethnicity, and age. Gestational Diabetes: Risk factors include previous gestational diabetes, obesity, family history, and certain ethnicities.

Complications of Diabetes Mellitus:

Cardiovascular Disease: Increased risk of heart attack, stroke, and peripheral artery disease
Kidney Disease (Nephropathy): Damage to the blood vessels in the kidneys, potentially leading to kidney failure
Nerve Damage (Neuropathy): Can cause pain, numbness, and tingling in the hands and feet, as well as other health issues
Eye Damage (Retinopathy): Damage to the blood vessels in the retina, potentially leading to blindness
Foot Problems: Increased risk of infections, ulcers, and amputations due to poor circulation and nerve damage
Skin Problems: Increased susceptibility to infections, such as fungal and bacterial infections
Dental Problems: Increased risk of gum disease and tooth decay.
Mental Health Problems: Diabetes can be associated with increased risk of depression and anxiety.

Management and Treatment:
Diet: A healthy diet low in added sugars, refined carbohydrates, and saturated fats, and rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains is crucial.
Exercise: Regular physical activity helps improve insulin sensitivity and blood sugar control.
