SEXUAL HEALTH & AYURVEDA
By Dr Suneet Arora, BAMS, PGDHH, Ayurveda Physician
In Indian philosophy, the four-fold purpose of life include Dharma (right action), Artha (Right prosperity), Kama (Right desire and enjoyment of sensual pleasures) and finally, Moksha (Freedom from all that).
In four ashrams (stages of life), Ghihasta ashram (stage of a householder-family man) is most important and dynamic. One needs to enjoy sensual pleasures for oneself, as well for one’s spouse; and to have healthy progenies to continue the gene-pool.
But inability to enjoy sexual pleasure or inability to reproduce leaves a person with a deep sense of incompleteness in life.
Common problems in Sexual Health in men are:
1. Impotence - a generalized term for inability to have sex or having no libido (desire)
2. Erectile Dysfunction (ED) – inability to have or sustain enough penis erection to have penetrative intercourse.
3. Premature Ejaculation (PME) – inability to sustain the ejaculation or having ejaculation too soon.
4. Infertility by Azoospermia (no sperm production) or Oligo-zoospermia (having very low sperm count inadequate to have a baby)
Common problems in Sexual Health in women are:
1. Frigidity or having no libido (desire)
2. Dyspareunia (painful coitus)
3. Infertility by PCOD/ Fibroids/ Bad ovulation/ Hormonal disturbance etc.
Ayurvedic Approach to Sexual Health
As per the science and philosophy of Ayurveda, the sapta dhatu (seven major tissues) culminate in SHUKRA DHATU that may relate to the virility hormones all over the body and mind in both men and women. Similarly, VEERYA is said to be the healthy sperm that is there in males. OJAS is the final life force that is important to sustain the veerya and shukra.
In Ayurveda, food and lifestyle are written that clearly increase Ojas, Veerya and Shukra; and of a list of food and lifestyle that does the opposite – destroy Ojas, Veerya and Shukra.
Ayurvedic Treatment of Sexual Disorders:
Treatment of sexual health in Ayurveda:
With our 30 years of experience in Ayurveda practice, we have understood that THERE ARE NO SHORTCUTS here. Over the counter ‘quick fix’ tonic medications mostly are adulterated with pharma compounds as Viagra or narcotics as opium or hemp. They do more harm than good to the gullible users.
The classical treatment of sexual health as follows:
RASAYANA – general treatment to promote immunity and vitality and anti-ageing.
This is done with changing diet n lifestyle, panchkarma therapies, balancing doshas (vata pitta kapha) and agni (metabolism), correcting deficiencies, and tonic herbo-mineral formulations.
VAJIKARAN – specific treatment to improve sexual performance in both genders.
This is done with changing diet n lifestyle, panchkarma therapies, balancing doshas (vata pitta kapha) and agni (metabolism), correcting deficiencies, and tonic herbo-mineral formulations.
BANDHATVA (Infertility treatment) is done by:
Shukra janan (improving quantity of sperms, that is spermatogenesis – sperm production)
Shukra shodhan (improving the quality of sperm morphology)
Treating secondary causes like hypertension (hi BP), Diabetes, PCOS, Fibroids, UTI, PID etc.
Common ayurvedic herbs used here are ashwagandha, shatavari, amalaki, goksharu, shilajitu, swarna bhasma, etc.
Kayakalp VAAJI KALP capsules, Kayakalp COUNT KALP capsules & powder, Kayakalp RASAYAN capsules/powder/ liquids, Kayakalp MEDHA KALP capsules, Kayakalp STRESS KALP capsules and Kayakalp Massage oil have proven their worth in hundreds of patients in two decades.
Role of Counselling, Psychotherapy, Yoga and meditation is also very important.
Finally, understand that there are NO SHORTCUTS in treating sexual disorders.
It is a process of understanding the diagnosis, finding the secondary causes, and planning a complete holistic treatment for a few months (minimum 100 days, as Ayurveda says). And all this is done by an experienced and qualified Ayurveda physician.
